The difference between woven and knitted upholstery fabrics

production method

There are two production methods for upholstery fabrics: woven and knitted. Each production method leads to different properties. Knitted fabrics are made by hooking yarn loops together, resulting in a stretchy, flexible fabric which is comfortable. Knitted upholstery fabrics are manufactured using specially designed knitting machines.

Woven upholstery fabrics consist of intersecting warp and weft threads, which creates a firm, more structured and less stretchy fabric. Such fabrics are manufactured using age-old looms (some Scandinavian and Scottish manufacturers still use them!) or modern weaving machines.

Because knitted fabrics are flexible and stretchable, they are almost always manufactured from a blend of yarns: wool for suppleness and warmth, and a synthetic fibre to ensure strength (and prevent the fabric from becoming too loose, as can happen with an old woollen or cotton jumper). Compared to woven upholstery fabrics, knitted upholstery fabrics crease less. This is due to the loop structure, which creates ‘air pockets’, making the fabric more voluminous and better insulated.

Examples of brands offering knitted upholstery fabrics include: Kvadrat Febrik and BYBORRE.
