The company started out as a textile trading firm and was founded by Ernst Rohde and Max Marx. At that time, it was still called Marx + Rohde.
From the 1920s onwards, Marx + Rohde specialised in the Art Deco and Bauhaus styles. This made the company particularly popular in Eastern Europe, where it held a significant market share.
