About Gudbrandsdalens Uldvarefabrik
Gudbrandsdalens Uldvarefabrik is a Norwegian textile company, based in Lillehammer, founded in 1887.
The name ‘Gudbrandsdalens’ is derived from the Gudbrandsdal region. This region is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and high-quality wool production. Both have had an influence on the company and its products.
Starting out as a specialist in wool products, Gudbrandsdalens Uldvarefabrik (GU) has gradually developed into a manufacturer of high-quality upholstery fabrics. Wool remains a key component in these fabrics due to its durability, comfort and natural insulating properties.
GU has brought all its production processes under one roof, giving the company full control over the quality of its fabrics.
An interesting detail: the renowned Hallingdal 65, marketed by the Danish company Kvadrat, was developed and is still produced by Gudbrandsdalens. In addition, the Amdal and Bardal are well-known upholstery fabrics from Gudbrandsdalens. The Amdal upholstery fabric is a lightly felted woollen fabric with a wonderfully soft surface. This upholstery fabric was designed by Per Bjørnsen in 2001 and was updated in 2018 by Ragnhild Nordhagen and Christiane Müller. The composition consists of 70% wool and 30% viscose. The fabric is highly durable with a Martindale rating of 100,000, making it suitable for intensive use. It also has a lightfastness rating of 5–7 and complies with various fire safety standards.
