Marie Kristensen (wife of a doctor and resident of Noord Jutland) collected old Danish fustian fabrics and, shortly after the Second World War, met the Danish-American Peter Kjeldsen (a successful businessman with various companies in the United States).
Peter was impressed by her collection and suggested setting up a weaving workshop that could carry on this cultural heritage.
The company was established at Tylstrup, north of Aalborg, and was called Vævegården.
Initially, the wool was washed, prepared and dyed in a rented cellar in Brønderslev, whilst the weaving took place on local farms. Quality control was carried out at Vævegården. In 1957, Peter sold the business, which by then also had its own furniture shop. Subsequently, all activities were centralised at Vævegården. In 1972, the first mechanical looms arrived, but this did not mean that the old handlooms had to be phased out. These were used for the more unique and artistic weaves, such as those for the church.
Today, Vævegården – now known as Danish Art Weaving (DAW) – continues to uphold the weaving traditions and high standards that Marie Kristensen had in mind. Production at Danish Art Weaving has moved abroad, although Danish Art Weaving still uses fustian weaves.
