Camira Fabrics has its origins in a wool spinning mill founded in 1822 by John and Holdsworth. In the decades that followed, his four sons joined the business. Together, they developed the company from a spinning mill into a weaving mill that supplied upholstery fabrics to railway companies and shipbuilders all over the world. In the second half of the nineteenth century, John Holdsworth & Company was commissioned to upholster the Houses of Parliament and Trafelgar Square Fountains with their renowned upholstery fabrics. The largest commission ever, which remains in force to this day, was the upholstery of the London Underground carriages in 1863.
During the Second World War, John, Holdsworth & Company and 80% derived their turnover from supplying all kinds of fabrics to the Ministry of War, such as camouflage canvas for jeeps.
Due to fierce international competition and declining turnover, the original spinning mill had to be sold and the company ceased to exist after six generations, until Camira acquired the brand name and all assets in 2007 and incorporated the renowned John Holdsworth & Company into Camira Group. Since acquiring an English weaving mill in 2013, they have been weaving their own yarns. In 2022, with a view to sustainability, they acquired Iinouiio, a textile recycling company.
Camira now produces 1 million metres of upholstery fabrics a year for the transport sector and 7 million for commercial contracts.
